Meet Pete: An Exceptional Operative at Van Elle

To keep the introduction train going, we thought we might jump straight into introducing you to Pete, our Training Operative.

Pete joined Van Elle as a shunter driver nine years ago and later transitioned into an operative role at our training centre. With over 40 years of experience, including working as a transport manager and holding his Class 1 license, Pete brings a wealth of knowledge to the team.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into construction training?

Pete’s journey in driving began after leaving the army at 21, and focusing on building a successful career as an HGV driver.

After starting at Van Elle as a shunter driver for our Smart Foot shed, Pete was introduced to new challenges in the training centre, including operating a crane for the first time.

What is your favourite aspect of being a operative?

After speaking with Pete, he expressed his experience has only deepened his passion for driving and training. “I love when participants come in saying, ‘I can’t do it,’ and I’m able to help them overcome their doubts and achieve what they thought was impossible,” Pete says.

Watching individuals’ confidence grow throughout the course is one of the most rewarding parts of his job. Since joining the training centre, Pete and the team have had a high pass rate, which gives him a great sense of achievement and pride in the work he does.

What is your favourite course to operate?

Pete’s favourite course to operate is the Slinger Signaller. This course is both challenging and rewarding, with trainees needing to master a variety of lifts including pick and carry duties in a short amount of time, which can be quite challenging. It’s a lot of work, with a longer duration, and it’s a bit more involved, every session is a new challenge.

In addition to operating, he also takes on maintenance tasks in the yard, which adds to his sense of fulfilment by contributing in various ways.

What is your favourite thing about working at Van Elle?

One of Pete’s favourite things about working at Van Elle is the work-life balance it offers. He candidly expressed his appreciate that he can work days and times that fit perfectly for his stage in life when retirement might not be too far away.

He also enjoys working with the fantastic training team, especially Matt, and the supportive and friendly environment at Van Elle makes each day enjoyable.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Outside of work, Pete loves to play golf and travel, with Benidorm being one of his favourite destinations. Family is incredibly important to Pete. He has five children and ten grandchildren, and is very close with his brother, Reg, who also works at Van Elle.

On weekends, Pete enjoys taking his mum shopping every Saturday and spending quality time with his family. Like most of us, Sundays are reserved for a good roast, which has become a cherished tradition as he takes his mum and wife out every week for a Sunday dinner.

Pete’s dedication, experience, and passion make him a valued member of the Van Elle team, and he continues to inspire both his colleagues and trainees with his work.
