You’ve met Matt our trainer and assessor, now its time we introduce you to our Lead Trainer and Assessor, Ant.
Ant joined Van Elle in September 2023, bringing with him a rich background in plant operations and training. After leaving school, Ant began his career as a crane operator in the steel industry, working shifts that laid the foundation for his future in construction.
A friend’s connection soon led him to a course and a job at Wembley Stadium within a week, where he spent 11 years honing his skills. His experience with plant operations eventually earned him a position in the training department, where he completed several qualifications and taught courses globally.
After returning to the UK, Ant worked for Balfour Beatty on the HS2 project before finding his place at Van Elle.
For Ant, the thrill of training comes from seeing people improve throughout the duration of a course. He enjoys watching participants make daily progress and feels a great sense of satisfaction when they pass at the end. “I get to meet new people every day, face new challenges, and no day is ever the same,” he says.
Ant is proud to be part of a fantastic team at the Van Elle training centre. He loves helping anyone who needs it and believes that the team truly embodies the heart of what they do.
One of Ant’s favourite courses to teach is the AP (Appointed Person) course. “It’s busy, engaging, and full of challenges that keep me on my toes,” he explains. The five-day, higher-level format allows him to build strong relationships with participants, helping them succeed and fuelling his pride in supporting those dedicated to the industry.
Despite not having a university background, Ant enjoys working with graduates and apprentices who challenge him to stay sharp. Ant mentioned “I feel fortunate to work at a company where the people are genuinely great”.
The support at Van Elle is incredible, and the training team is lovely. One of the most rewarding aspects of Ant’s job is helping people get back into work. While it can be challenging, the impact he makes is deeply fulfilling.
Outside of work, Ant is an avid Sheffield United season ticket holder and is usually at the games on Saturdays. He and his wife have a 14-year-old Staffie named Paddy, and they love traveling with him in their camper van.
Recently, Ant got back into running and joined a Monday evening running club. He’s completed over 100 Park runs and attends every Saturday, sometimes volunteering. Ant has also had a lifelong passion for water sports, especially white-water rafting, which he has loved since a young age.
Ant’s diverse experiences, both professionally and personally, make him a valued member of the Van Elle team, where he continues to inspire and support others in their journey through the construction industry.
