Course Overview

Who Should Attend?

This Location & Avoidance of Underground Services training programme is designed for Operatives and Supervisors who need to locate underground apparatus for work on the roadways and highways. This course can be undertaken as a standalone unit and is a one-day course.

Course training in Unit 1 may also form part of a more comprehensive operative or supervisor NRSWA training program, which includes other units.

Course Information

Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course content:

  • New Roads & Street Works Act
  • Basic principles of location and avoidance of underground services
  • Hazard identification and the risks associated with them
  • Reading and interpreting site plans
  • Practical use of equipment

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of the current NRSW Act and standards as prescribed by City & Guilds
    • Identify potential risks to themselves and others
    • Read and understand site plans
    • Operate cable avoidance tools to avoid or locate underground apparatus

Assessment

A high proportion of discussion and simulated assessments supplemented with video and classroom-based tutorials and progress tests.

Certification

Learners will receive the Street Works Qualifications Register Card (SWQR) through Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) which is renewable every five years.
